In keeping with the need to provide a much needed fillip to the students’ energy that could find the academic weight of the New University rather sapping and monotonous ‘The Cultural Forum was initiated comprising faculty members from various disciplines both from inside and outside Ravenshaw University. Its job (as spelt out by the President in its first meeting) was to supervise cultural pursuits among students so that the environment of the new University shall be culture-suavy which will provide a healthy shot-in-the-arm to meet academic as well as non academic needs of the University. Accordingly, in the month of January and February’ 2007 a talent hunt was conducted to collect names of students interested to showcase their talents in Music, Dance, Art, Recitation, Quiz, Choral Presentation, Compeering, News Reading, Drama etc. The member visited hostels and invited names through posters and pamphlets which resulted in about eight hundred entries. The purpose of the Advisory Body being to create a field for the proposed FM Channel of Ravenshaw Radio Music Composers/ Directors from A.I.R, Cuttack and Oriya Films were contacted to supervise and select in-house talents for making the Ravenshaw Band of Choral presentation. Accordingly Sri Swaroop Nayak, the noted composer of Oriya Film songs and Sri Prasenjit Mohanty of A.I.R., Cuttack supervised such talent hunts from among the students and thankfully helped keep-in-readiness about six Choral Presentations that can be showcased as and when necessary. The Cultural Forum also conducted a Poetry Recitation in both Oriya and English where the Faculty and Students participated reciting famous poetry by recognized names like T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Pablo Neruda and Sri Guru Charan Mohanty, Sri Ramakanta Rath, Sri Devdas Chhotray etc. This show was conducted by student hosts to everybody’s satisfaction. Besides, a poetry-cum-painting workshop was organized by the Forum where one of the Advisory Board members was the presenter. The Forum pledges to conduct many more cultural shows in the coming academic session with students and staff to redeem its promises.
