Vision
English holds a central place in the curriculum as language is power: it underpins all learning. We aim for our students to develop critical awareness, the ability to craft their writing, an appreciation of literature, and the confidence to articulate their ideas in order to serve them in their academic, professional and personal lives beyond their time at Ravenshaw University, Cuttack.
Mission
The mission of the English Department is to promote literacy–specifically the ability to read, write, and think critically. This mission includes the fostering of such technological literacy as information retrieval, research, and communication. Literate individuals can gather, analyze, and communicate information effectively as well as think creatively and draw independent conclusions–skills that are the cornerstone of a healthy democracy and key to the future of an urban area in an increasingly information-based economy. The Department fosters these goals through instruction in all areas of literatures written in English and in the production and reception of a variety of texts, including academic, professional, and creative writing. These goals thread through the Department’s wide range of programs and interests: from our contributions to general education, where students are introduced to the skills of critical thinking, reading, and writing; to the undergraduate level and the Maters Level, where the focus includes cultural and literary traditions, as well as skills of analysis, criticism, and written argument; to the Ph.D. and M. Phil. in literary studies that promote the spirit of research in the scholars.
Objective
The objective of the department is to impart:
- the reading skills to examine literature from multiple eras, cultures, and genres with critical understanding;
- the ability to express themselves clearly and comprehensively, orally and in writing;
- research skills which enable them to expand, from a variety of perspectives, their own readings of literature and understanding of language;
- an appropriate knowledge of relevant fields within the discipline, including literature; literary history, criticism, and theory;
- an enhanced appreciation and enjoyment of literature and language.
