Department of Geography

Department of Geography was initially established in the year 1944 when Ravenshaw was a college affiliated to Patna University (Bihar). Sri D. Chatterjee was the founder Head of the Department. Since the beginning, teaching in the department has its focus on the applied components of geographical knowledge and hence, when teaching at post-graduate level was introduced in the year 1981, it was renamed as Department of Applied Geography. The department has created a niche for itself in eastern India during a short span of four decades of PG level teaching.

 

Vision

The Department of Geography aspires to be a center of excellence in teaching, research and training along with understanding, explaining and improving communities and human conditions at different spatial scales.

Mission

To make fundamental contributions to the advancement of geographic science by:

  1. Conducting disciplinary & integrative research and promoting excellence in geographic scholarship that spans local to global scales, with an emphasis on a geospatial perspective of our changing planet and its sustainability.
  2. Equipping undergraduate and graduate students with real-world skills and competency development to meet the challenges associated with the continuing evolution of geographic science while providing them with vibrant and fulfilling educational experiences.
  3. Applying geographic science to societal and environmental issues in our state, the nation and the global community.
  4. Furthermore, the Department is aimed at nurturing the finest professionals and individuals through various academic, extra and co-curricular activities.

Prof. Prana Krushna Parija

Founder Professor

Prof. Prana Krushna Parija, the founder Professor in the Department of Botany, Ravenshaw College (now University) was a person of international eminence. Graduated from Cambridge University, UK under the guidance of Prof. F. F. Blackman, he did his work on respiratory regulation in ripening apples and proposed Blackman-Parija theory. Prof. Parija setup School of Research in Botany in the then Ravenshaw College in the field of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. Prof. Praija did his research in different field of plant sciences including respiration and osmotic regulation, aquatic weed physiology experimental morphology and rice physiology and anatomy. With his multi-facet talent, Prof. Parija became the Principal of the then Ravenshaw College; Director, Department of Agriculture, Government of Orissa; First Vice-chancellor of Utkal University; Pro Vice-chancellor, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and subsequently member of Orissa Legislative Assembly.

At the national level, Prof. Parija served as the President of the Indian Botanical Society IBS) (1930) and President of Indian Science Congress (1960). He was conferred with ‘Padma Bhusan’ in the year 1955. Prof. Parija was also a literary talent and has penned many literary creations.
