Overview & History

Established in 2002, with Post Graduate Diploma Programme which was later upgraded to Post Graduate Degree Programme in 2005, the department of Journalism & Mass Communication provides state-of-the-art facilities for the students to produce industry grade quality media content. The Department offers a two-year (four semesters) MA programme in Journalism & Mass Communication and a three-year (six semesters) Bachelor programme in the subject. It is the endeavour of the Department, in its approach to higher education, to create a band of dedicated and professional communicators and journalists for the society with a difference. The curriculum boasts a judicious convergence of theory and practical papers. It is upgraded regularly as per industry demands, as employability is one of the major objectives of our course. The department regularly organises seminars and workshops on relevant topics, field tours, guest lectures, campus interviews etc. with a special emphasis on the career prospects. The department also brings out one monthly bi-lingual lab journal titled with “Ravenshaw Post” as part of the in-house professional exercise of students. The alumni of this department have been working in different leading print, electronic media, national news agencies, academics and advertising and public relations organisations. The basic infrastructure includes one smart classroom, well-equipped computer laboratory, modern audio-visual laboratory, library, and Ravenshaw Radio, the University’s Community Radio Station at 90.4 MHz. For admission into PG course, any student with a bachelor’s degree can apply; for UG course in J&MC, any student with intermediate degree can apply.
