Department of Botany

The Department of Botany was founded in 1906 as the first department in the subject with an aim to impart teaching and research in plant science in the state of Odisha. With more than 100 years of Botany teaching, the Department not only excelled in the field of education but also in the various field of Plant Science Research. Presently the Department is offering U.G. (Botany), P.G. (Botany), P.G. (Biotechnology), M.Phil. (Botany), Ph.D. (Botany), Ph.D. (Biotechnology) Programmes. The Department is presently supported by DST-FIST, Govt. of India (2nd Term; Rs.1.77 crore) and engaged in research activities in the field of Plant Biotechnology & Plant Tissue Culture, Ecotoxicology, Plant Physiology & Biochemistry, Photosynthesis, Stress Biology, Acoustics, Ethnobotany, Microbial detoxification, Microbial ecology, Plant microbe interaction and plant improvement through transgenic approaches supported by various funding agencies such as UGC, DBT, DST, ISRO, CSIR and SERB. At present the department is a part of ‘Center of Excellence in Environment and Public Health’ funded by World Bank Project of Government of Odisha under OHEPEE for carrying out cutting edge research in the field. The Department has six research laboratories, three P.G. laboratories and two U.G. laboratories and one Central Instrumentation Facility. The Department has one state of art conference hall, two lecture theatres, one smart class room, one reading room and a museum.
