The Department of Political Science, Ravenshaw University enjoys an exceptional reputation for both teaching and research in the discipline. Extremely rich in academic potential, comprising a faculty known widely for their research and teaching abilities, it ranks as one of the best in the state.
The growth of the Department has coincided with the progress of the discipline of Political Science- from a narrow body of legal and theoretical knowledge to a comprehensive social science- that integrates and interrogates sociological, economic, philosophical and cultural dimensions and thereby better relates to a purposive study of politics keeping especially the Indian reality in focus. The major thrust areas of the Department are normative political theory, theorising Indian Politics, International Politics, human rights issues, gender and development politics etc.
The department of chemistry was initially named as Mayurbhanj Chemical Laboratory. The red building with Victorian architecture, which houses the department still carries this name engraved on it. The Maharaja of the then princely state of Mayurbhanj, Sri Krushna Chandra Bhanja Deo, has generously contributed for the initial establishment of the laboratory.
