The Department of Geology is the cradle of Geology education in the state of Odisha and the Department came into being in the year 1954 with the opening of the Undergraduate program under Utkal university. Post graduate teaching was started in the year 1956 and continued up to 1977 when it was shifted to Utkal University campus at Bhubaneswar. UG teaching however, continued in this institution under Utkal University till 2006.In 2010 Post Graduate teaching was restarted in the Department. The academic block which houses the Department since its inception is reminiscent of Victorian architecture having a floor space of 22,000 square feet and was funded by the Kalinga Foundation, the Govt. of Odisha and the Union Government.

Vision

The department of Geology envisions at attaining excellence in teaching and research. It seeks to achieve highest level of education through continuous revision and expansion of our educational, research, and out reach programs in order to produce holistically trained and competent geoscientists capable of excelling in field of academics and industry alike.

To develop in each student, critical thinking, enthusiasm, initiative for becoming a good citizen and practitioner of the discipline.
To emphasize on experimential, field-based pedagogy for achieving lifelong learning.
To provide an environment that promotes the development of well-rounded professionals withdeep social, cultural and ethical values.
To contribute to the enrichment of science and society through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge through scientific research.
