A leading platform for enriching  moral values and promoting Indian Culture with Sanskrit Literature

Adhyapaka Kashinath Dash spearheaded the teaching of Sanskrit at Ravenshaw College after his Master’s degree in the year 1907 from Calcutta University. Later eminent scholars like Artaballabha Mohanty, Laxmikanta Choudhury and Karunakar Kar joined the Department. Subsequently the department came to offer courses in Sanskrit and Odia in the year 1929. In 1938 Kunja Bihari Tripathi joined the department and could lead it to the heights of glory and excellence in teaching and research both in Sanskrit and Odia.

Vision

To emerge as a centre of excellence in the studies of Sanskrit with focus on innovative teaching, research and extension activities for building a creative, enlightened and productive society.

Mission

  1. To take Sanskrit learning beyond classroom, inculcate problem-solving skills and sensitiveness among students for rational decision making.
  2. To create and disseminate knowledge in Sanskrit through interdisciplinary research and creative enquiry for developing a dynamic, just and sustainable society.
  3. To proactively participate in linguistic policy designing through extension activities.

Prof. Prana Krushna Parija

Founder Professor

Prof. Prana Krushna Parija, the founder Professor in the Department of Botany, Ravenshaw College (now University) was a person of international eminence. Graduated from Cambridge University, UK under the guidance of Prof. F. F. Blackman, he did his work on respiratory regulation in ripening apples and proposed Blackman-Parija theory. Prof. Parija setup School of Research in Botany in the then Ravenshaw College in the field of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. Prof. Praija did his research in different field of plant sciences including respiration and osmotic regulation, aquatic weed physiology experimental morphology and rice physiology and anatomy. With his multi-facet talent, Prof. Parija became the Principal of the then Ravenshaw College; Director, Department of Agriculture, Government of Orissa; First Vice-chancellor of Utkal University; Pro Vice-chancellor, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and subsequently member of Orissa Legislative Assembly.

At the national level, Prof. Parija served as the President of the Indian Botanical Society IBS) (1930) and President of Indian Science Congress (1960). He was conferred with ‘Padma Bhusan’ in the year 1955. Prof. Parija was also a literary talent and has penned many literary creations.
