Department of Applied Geography

Year of Establishment: 1944

Department of Geography was established in 1944 when Ravenshaw was a college affiliated to Patna University. Sri D. Chatterjee was the founder Head of the Department. Teaching in the department has always focused on the applied components of geographical knowledge, and hence when teaching at post-graduate level was introduced in the year 1981, it was renamed as Department of Applied Geography. M. Phil and Ph. D. programmes were started in the department in 2007. Our students are placed in various academic / research institutions in Odisha and outside. Currently the department offers both undergraduate (B.A. / B.Sc. Honours and Pass) and postgraduate (M.A. / M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph. D.) programmes in Geography. Our faculty specialise in Urban and Regional Planning, Population Geography, Social Geography, and Environment and Development Studies and are leading research projects funded by UGC, DST and ICSSR. The department maintains its own library with a collection of more than 1000 books besides a collection of census publications, journals and magazines. The department has two laboratories. For teaching of practicals in Remote Sensing (RS) & Geographic Information System (GIS), there is an air-conditioned Computer Lab. The Department of Applied Geography aspires to be nationally known for high standard teaching and cutting-edge research. As a step towards achieving the goal, the department organised the 39^th Annual meet and Conference of the Institute of Indian Geographers (IIG), December 26-28, 2017.
