Department of Sociology

Year of Establishment: 1975

The Department of Sociology commenced with the introduction of Sociology as an elective subject in 1975 at the UG level. Subsequently, the discipline advanced as an Honours subject in 1982. Post Graduate programme in the subject was started in 1992. MPhil / PhD research programme began in 2011. The sanctioned faculty strength is 09. The broad thrust of the Department is two-fold: One, to promote and project the discipline as vocationally viable; two, to situate Sociology of Development in the context of Odisha society with special reference to its disparities, deprivations and marginalization and to promote fieldwork as a tradition in the practice of Sociology. The Department’s alumni have been placed in almost all domains of work – politics, bureaucracy, media, academics, management, social work, and the development sector.
