Prof. Somnath Khaoash is an Professor at the Department of Geology. He has carried out his doctoral research at the CSIR- Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar. He obtained Ph.D from Utkal University in the year 2000 under the supervision of Prof. A.K.Paul (Utkal University) and Dr Jay Krushna Mohanty (Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT).He has over 20 years of experience in teaching and research. His research interests include Ore Geology, Mineral economics, Mineral characterisation and beneficiation of low grade and off-grade ores. He has also contributed to the field of Hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry. He has a number of papers in national and international peer reviewed journals. He has completed two research projects funded by different national agencies. Besides his contributions to teaching and research he is also involved in various administrative activities.

My research team works in the field of ore geology, mineral characterisation and beneficiation, carbon sequestration, groundwater quality and aqueous geochemistry. We are working on characterisation and beneficiation of low-grade ores of iron, manganese, chromium and bauxite obtained from the mine or processing circuits with the aim of value addition in form of recovery of valuable metals, bi-product and co-product. Work is also undertaken to unravel the tectonic setting, crustal evolution and chromite mineralisation of the Precambrian Boula-Nausahi Igneous Complex (BNIC). The incidence of PGM associated with sulphide mineralisation in the brecciated zone of BNIC is another potential area of interest to understand the PGE mineralogy, geochemical attributes and mode of their formation and the pay zones. The work also encompasses processing of ores for value addition and preparation of down-stream products like alloys and composites. We are also working on a chromite deposit from a volcano-sedimentary setting which is unique in terms of its nature and occurrence. The structural features, mineral assemblage and mode of occurrence of the chromite-fuchsite-quartzite is a typical volcano-sedimentary deposit which is different from widely known magmatic chromite deposits.

A sub- group is also working on water quality and groundwater chemistry in urban and mining areas. It strives to determine the hydrogeochemical processes having a bearing on the chemistry of the aquifer regime, the nature of heavy metal dissolution and impact of acid mine drainage on groundwater in coal mining areas. The geochemical behaviour of precious heavy metals in coal mine drainage is also being studied by the group.
