Year of Establishment: 1954

The Department of Geology is the cradle of geology education  in the state of  Odisha, which is well known for its natural and mineral resources. The Department building was constructed from a personal grant provided by Shri Biju Pattanaik, the then Honourable Chief Minister of Odisha, and former Union Cabinet Minister of India from the Kalinga Foundation for the growth of geology education in the state.  The Department of Geology offers UG, PG, M. Phil and Ph. D. programmes. M.Sc Geology course was started in 2010 and has an intake capacity of 20 students each year. The laboratories have been refurbished and replenished  through funding from UGC, and DST-FIST grant of the Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi. The Department has a number of high end instruments such as X-Ray Diffractometer (Ultima IV, Rigaku, Japan),  Ion-Chromatograph (Dionex, Thermo Fischer, USA). There are 24 student microscope (Olympus, Japan) and three research microscope with camera attachment and software. Two stereo zoom microscope with camera attachment and software is also available for students. The Department has a well developed museum which has a rich and diverse collection of geological specimens including rocks, minerals, ores, fossils, and various models of geological events and processes. A GIS and Remote Sensing laboratory has been set up in the Department for training students. Every year a large number of undergraduate students of this Department get into IITs through JAM and Central Universities through CUCET. Recently, the Department completed a DST funded research project entitled “Metallogenic Development of Manganese Ores in parts of Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt, Odisha, India”.
