The Department of Political Science, Ravenshaw University enjoys an exceptional reputation for both teaching and research in the discipline. Extremely rich in academic potential, comprising a faculty known widely for their research and teaching abilities, it ranks as one of the best in the state.  The Department was established in 1958, under the auspices of erstwhile Ravenshaw College. It has a long and glorious history to its credit.

The growth of the Department has coincided with the progress of the discipline of Political Science- from a narrow body of legal and theoretical  knowledge to a  comprehensive social science- that integrates and interrogates sociological, economic, philosophical and cultural dimensions and thereby better relates to a purposive study of politics keeping especially the Indian reality in focus. The major thrust areas of the Department are Normative Political Theory, Theorising Indian Politics, International Politics, Human rights issues, Gender and Development Politics etc.

The Department offers courses for UG, PG, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes and attracts students  due to innovative ways of teaching and student centric academic programmes throughout the year. In addition to teaching, the Department has focused on research themes like Election studies, Gender Studies, International Relations and Development Studies etc. The faculty members of the Department have been awarded many prestigious research projects from different institutions like ICSSR, MHRD etc.

The Department has also proudly hosted many international visiting Professors under the  Fulbright Scheme from University of California, University of Mary and  Virginia State University.It had also international students from countries such as Belgium, Afghanistan, Fiji and Madagascar.
