The Department of Chemistry has a rich tradition of research in Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Research in Organic Chemistry covered a very wide field such as drugs, natural products, dyes, polymers, and organic reaction mechanisms. The synthesis of Coordination complexes of Uranium, the study of the complex equilibria in solution of metal ions and ligands, synthesis of Werner type coordination complexes and study of their kinetics and reaction mechanisms in solution were the main focuses in Inorganic Chemistry. The main thrust of research in Physical Chemistry was: ion solvent interactions using viscosity, and conductivities as probes, thermodynamics of ion- association, transport properties of ions in solution, kinetics and mechanisms of reactions in solution phase.
Recently with the availability NMR, SEM, GC, GCMS, Electroanalytical and cold plasma reactor facilities, and state of the art synthetic laboratories the area of research has been vastly expanded further to include new frontiers of chemical biology, materials chemistry, medicine and environmental chemistry.
Some of the current areas of interest of the Department are as follows:
