A transformative learning community to realise the dreams, spread the knowledge and create global leaders.
In the early twentieth century, as modern branches of chemical science were evolving, a few visionary academicians of Odisha made a humble beginning by establishing a separate Department of Chemistry at the then Ravenshaw College. Prof. Atul Chandra Ganguli was the first head of the Department. The teaching was limited to intermediate level for quite sometime until the College moved to its present location and the Department of Chemistry transformed into a full-fledged department around 1922.

The vision of the Chemical Science Department at Ravenshaw University is to impart high quality undergraduate and postgraduate level of knowledge to students coupled with cutting edge research activity by the faculty and the students of the University. The teaching philosophy at this department is not only to impart high quality training to students to make them talented and motivated scientific personnel but also to inculcate human values and concern for societal needs and environment.
The Department of Chemistry was initially named as Mayurbhanj Chemical Laboratory. The red building with Victorian architecture, which houses the department still carries this name engraved on it. The Maharaja of the then princely state of Mayurbhanj, Sri Krushna Chandra Bhanja Deo, has generously contributed for the establishment of the laboratory.
