About Department
The Department of Geography aspires to be a center of excellence in teaching, research and training along with understanding, explaining and improving communities and human conditions at different spatial scales.
Vision
Department of Geography was initially established in the year 1944 when Ravenshaw was a college affiliated to Patna University (Bihar). Sri D. Chatterjee was the founder Head of the Department. Since the beginning, teaching in the department has its focus on the applied components of geographical knowledge and hence, when teaching at post-graduate level was introduced in the year 1981, it was renamed as Department of Applied Geography. The department has created a niche for itself in eastern India during a short span of four decades of PG level teaching.
Mission
- Conducting disciplinary & integrative research and promoting excellence in geographic scholarship that spans local to global scales, with an emphasis on a geospatial perspective of our changing planet and its sustainability.
- Equipping undergraduate and graduate students with real-world skills and competency development to meet the challenges associated with the continuing evolution of geographic science while providing them with vibrant and fulfilling educational experiences.
- Applying geographic science to societal and environmental issues in our state, the nation and the global community.
- Furthermore, the Department is aimed at nurturing the finest professionals and individuals through various academic, extra and co-curricular activities.
